CDS Wireless

Founded in 1994, Control Data Systems (CDS) is a privately owned technology company located in Romania. CDS is a developer of wireless products and technologies for industrial applications in areas such as aerospace, oil & gas, plant monitoring and building automation. One thing that makes CDS stand out is the drive towards innovation and a recognition for the importance of R&D. CDS resources have filed a list of patents in the field of wireless communications through the US Patent Office.

Through its research and activities, CDS has pushed the limits of industrial Wireless Sensor Networks technology on several occasions, such as when porting the ISA100 Wireless implementation from the 2.4 GHz bandwidth specified by the standard to new physical layers, namely Ultra-Wide Band and sub – 1 GHz. The entire ISA100.11a stack is constructed employing widely accepted and proven standards and the stack’s architecture is in strict adherence to the reference ISO model. Currently it is implemented on top of 802.15.4; however, new alternatives are in the works using different PHY layers such 802.15.4a – UWB and sub-GHz 802.15.4.

Recently, CDS investigated the feasibility of porting the ISA100 Wireless protocol onto a faster PHY layer than 802.15.4 (802.15.4 UWB) and executed the design and implementation of Sensor/Actuator Wireless Nodes and the corresponding Wireless Gateway. The end result of the project is an implementation of ISA100 Wireless MAC layer onto a UWB PHY with great potential for avionics and automotive industries. The VN360 board bundles the STMicroelectronics STM32L162 ARM micro-controller and the Decawave DW1000 IEEE 802.15.4 UWB radio module, connected over the SPI interface.
